Chemistry

"Chemistry is the branch of science concerned with the properties     and interactions of the substances of which matter is composed" is the dictionary meaning. It is divided     into three categories, Inorganic, Organic and Physical. But recent year developments have given rise to specialised forms such as biochemistry which is the study of substances found in biological organisms and Neurochemistry is the chemical study of the nervous system.

Chemical Technologist

Technology is the application of science to develop and control processes, methods or and consumer products in diverse fields industries. The Chemical Technologist is the general designation of which a technologist is known. However, according to the field of specialisation, he may be known as Alcohol Technologist, ceramic Technologist, Fibre Technologist, Jute Technologist, food Technologist, Fuel Technologist, Glass Technologist,. Leather Technologist, Wood Technologist, etc. Chemical Technology is . distinct from Chemical Engineering, the former is concerned with the development and operation of processes for production  purposes while the latter is concerned with the engineering aspects, such as design, construction, installation and operation of plants and equipment for manufacturing chemical products.

Nature of Work

To achieve the above, he employs either the established or the new methods, using different equipment and machines, involving many processes or operations. Thus, the responsibility of a Chemical Technologist ranges from research and production to general administration. With higher assignments, the Chemical Technologist finds himself increasingly engaged in administrative and managerial affairs of the industry and many finally become responsible for the whole organisation, looking after its various aspects production, research, developments, sales, labour welfare, etc.
In his work, the Chemical Technologist is assisted by a team of junior technologists, research workers, operators, mechanics and laboratory technicians. These workers mainly carry out day-to-day analysis of raw materials and finished products, to control the processes at various stages for obtaining finished products of a standard quality, to operate repair and maintain the machinery in working order and to take precautionary measures to avoid contamination.
The work of a Chemical Technologist is essentially indoors, under varying conditions. It may be the congenial atmosphere of a laboratory or that of a hot, humid, dusty and smoky factory with all Sorts of obnoxious smells. The work may also require at times handling of bulk quantities of corrosive and injurious acids, gases and other chemicals.

Who is eligible?

A few polytechnics run diploma courses extending Over a period two or four years in various branches of technology Such as Te~ of Technology, Food Technology, Ceramics Technology, Glass and Enamel Technology, Instrument Technology, Leather Technology, Letter Press Printing, Printing Technology, etc. The one year, certificate course in Sugar Technology is conducted by the National Sugar Institute, Kanpur.
Further Training in technology is at the post-graduate degree diploma levels. The duration is usually two to three years.

Job Opportunities for post-graduate research in Chemical Technology leading to the Ph.D. degree are also available at some universities.
The range and variety of processes and industries that call for the services of Chemical Technologists are quite high. Openings exist in chemical and industrial plants manufacturing acids, alkalies, salts, fats, soaps, oils, vegetable oils, ceramics, glass, drugs, insecticides, explosives, waxes, glues, spirits, paints and varnishes, dye-stuffs, petroleum products, rubber, rayon, paper, sugar, fermentation products and synthetics, etc. Opportunities are also available in various research laboratories both in public and private sector.
Jobs are available mostly on the production and management side, though a few persons are employed on industrial and market research, plant designing, technical development and testing, college and university teaching, sales and service work and technical writing and journalism.

Chemical Engineer

Chemical engineers are concerned with the design and operation of processes and plant for the production of chemicals, petroleum fuels and products, polymers, cement and lime, minerals and metals, paper and board, sugar, foodstuffs, drugs and many other classes of materials. They may work in the fields of water or waste treatment and environmental regulation, or may undertake work similar to that of primary or extractive metallurgists. Some chemical engineers research new substances for fields such as spa exploration.
Chemical engineers may perform the following task: (i) seek 1 10 and more efficient processes, new materials and improvement or new uses for existing material; (ii) design methods and equipment to control the processes that transform or convert basic materials into useful products; (iii) ensure safe, efficient and environment made friendly operation of equipment and test the products being made  at various stages to check quality; (iv) design and build pilot plants provide data on how full-scale plants will operate; and investigate changes to current methods to reduce costs by increased output, better efficiency or Increase product quality, ensuring that the environment is not harmed.

Personal requirements include being able to identify, analyse and solve problems and good communication skills. Computing an design skills are also necessary along with practically and creativity, being able to accept responsibility and working without supervision.

Analytical Chemist: Type of work of analytical chemists varies from on industry to the other, however, they are generally engaged in analysing traces of pesticides in milk, determining manganese in steel or checking raw materials that go into making chocolates, checking the purity of solvents used for making paint.

Personal attributes: Good technical aptitude, keen interested in chemistry, organising ability, etc. are some of the desirable traits.
