Introduction
Branches of engineering
The aerospace engineering deals with the design, analysis, construction, testing and operation of aircraft. The course is based on the fundamentals of fluid dynamic, material science, structural analysis, propulsion, electronics, automatic control and guidance. This course does not prepare the candidate to be a pilot or a maintenance engineer.
Aeronautical Engineers work with one of the most technologically advanced branches of engineering. Their work involves the designing, construction, testing and operation as well as maintenance of aircraft and aircraft components. The main thrust in this area is on design and development, which extends even to space and satellite research.
3.Agricultural Engineering :
Principle of engineering and technology as applied to Prod.processing, transportation and storage of agricultural commodities.
Automobile Engineers deal mainly with the design, planning, manufacture as well as the repair, maintenance and up-gradation of all moving vehicles such as cars, trucks, motorcycles, scooters, etc. They look into the upkeep of vehicles to ensure their proper, efficient and economical running.
Petroleum refining, fertilizer technology, processing of food and agricultural products, synthetic food, petrochemicals, synthetic fibers, coal and mineral based industries and prevention and control of environmental pollution and the development and improvement of processes, design, construction, operation and management of the plants for these processes and research in these areas.
6.Civil Engineering :
A civil engineer is concerned with the creation of constructed facilities. The activities involve planning, analysis, design, construction amd maintenance of a variety of facilities such as buildings, highways and rail-roads, water-ways and canals, dam and power houses, water treatment and sewage disposal system, docks and harbour, briges and tunnels.
Design and construction of computers and development of computer programmes(known as computer software), and computer based information and control system.
8.Electronics and Communication Engineering :
Broad disciplines are electrical power engineering and electronics engineering. The former is concerned with the generation, distribution and use of electrical power and power control and instrumentation applications. The latter deals with the application of electronics in the processing of the formation in the field of communication and control system, electronic computers, industrial electronics and instrumentation.
.
The role of an electrical engineer comprises the design and development of more efficient electrical machinery, power systems, and control equipment for the generation, transmission and distribution of electrical energy and telecommunication. With the increasing demand for electrical energy, the development in audio and video communication systems, and the automation in industry, electrical engineers have become indispensable to society today.
Employment in industries and organisation concerned with the design, development and manufacture of equipment for economic and optimal exploitation of current energy technology, energy planning and management and technology transfer is offered to the energy engineer.
11.Physics Engineering:
Broad education in theoretical and experimental aspects of modern Phy. with an orientation towards some of the skills useful in technological applications. In addition to several core courses in Phy., special topics are covered by electives such as solid sate electronics, cryogenics, materials science, laser technology and applied nuclear science.
12.Production and Industrial Engineering :
Production and Industrial Engineers aim at higher productivity by adopting integrated design and efficient planning and operative systems. Their work involves the design and installation of integrated systems for men and materials, equipment and processes for increasing the productivity of goods, and detailing the optimum quality which is economically viable. They are responsible for planning, measuring and controlling all activities within the organisation, besides designing the production process for a product.
Design, construction and maintenance of instrumentation and instrumentation systems.
14.Manufacturing Science & Engineering:
Conversion of natural resources into manufacturer products. His required to take up the integrated design and efficient planning of the entire amnufacturing system which is becoming increasingly complex with the emergence of sophisticated Prod. methods and control systems.
15.Marine Engineering :
Marine Engineers are responsible for the safe running of all engines, boilers, refrigerating and sanitary equipment, deck machinery and steam connections of marine ships, and the maintenance, repair and construction of all marine machinery. This also includes the supervision of engine crew involved in operating the machines, and checking for smooth functioning of all steam engines, electric motors, propulsive engines, etc.
Design, operation and maintenance of machines and their components, mechanism, machine tools, manufacturing systems and processes, components of thermal power systems including internal combustion engines and turbomachinery, solar energy, heat transfer, air conditioning, refrigeration and industrial engineering including Prod., planning and control-both the fundamental and applied aspects leading to these areas.
17.Metallurgical Engineering:
Extracting of metals from ores, their refining or purification and their fabrication into useful shaped by casting, joining or Mech. working. He is also concerned with the study of the physical and chemical properties of metals and their structure in relation to their properties, principles of formation of alloy and methods of improving their properties
18.Mining Engineering:
Both the private and public sectors of the mining industry offer a wide range of opportunities to mining engineers. Not unsuitable for female candidates.
19.Telecommunication Engineering :
All important towns , cities, trade centres, harbours and ports of the world are connected with underground cables or radio links. Countries and continents have been brought closer by means of fast emanating, information carrying communication networks. All this has been made possible by the telecommunication engineers, who are involved with establishing communication by means of telephones, telegraphs, radar, radio, radio navigational aids, television, and tele-printers.
Town and country planners look after the optimal utilisation of land, and plan a town or country's growth in an orderly and aesthetic manner, at both the local and regional levels. The work necessitates conducting field surveys and analyses and formulating broad goals and development plans for an area, which are presented in the form of scale models, drawings, diagrams, charts, photographs, sketches, etc.

For engineer learning is a life long process.
As we know that the engineers are getting employment in nearly each industry and they enterprise the working produces of that industry. Also engineers draw very nice salaries and youth engineering graduates also can look for some of the exciting engineering career options in this field. However, engineering field is volatile. Some period it favors some field while at other time it favors another field. So while choosing your career option, you should take this things into account.
Remuneration in Engineering Careers
Generally engineers work in private sector or government sector. Also your salary of an engineer depends on the engineering field in which he is working. On average, fresh engineers get salary in the range of $20,000 to $30,000 annually. At the same time, for experienced engineers, it ranges from $60,000 to $80,000 annually. Your salary also depends on the institute from which you have taken your degree.
Career in engineering is based on systematic, logical problem solving in technical field. Engineers should be good team player (able to work in teams). An experienced engineer usually serves as supervisor, project leader who have to ensure that all team members coordinate well for achieving organizational goals.
Candidate seeking career in engineering field should have ability to keep balance between creative and scientific skills. He has to master established techniques while learn and innovate new ones.
