Event Management is about conceptualising an event, planning it and then executing it. Event management can be divided into two segments: personal and corporate. Functions like birthday parties and weddings are now being organised by event managers. On the other hand launching a product or a company conference needs to be professionally organised, hence the need for event management. This is a career with a lot of mental creativity, a lot of running around and finally, the satisfaction of seeing what you have accomplished.     .
Events have become an important segment of television content, with reality shows and live performances forming 50% of television time. Viewers now no longer stick to just one channel, or read just one new newspaper. They are trying their best to break the clutter. Event Managers have to look into every minute details of the event.

Eligibility

To become an efficient event manager, there is no need for a certified qualification, but the candidate should have a genuine passion for conducting events, have a very good organising ability and be flexible to work for long hours. However, to become an event manager in a reputed firm or company, one must have an MBA degree along with good public relations.
You would have to begin the whole process by first meeting people, getting the site of the event ready, organising the food, flowers, decorations, etc. ready. The lighting and acoustics would have to be carefully scrutinised, the atmosphere would have to be visually pleasing, and any extras thrown in to delight the participants would count as a plus point. Things could go haywire, like there could b a sudden squall in the weather or the sound system could develop a fault. All this would have to be seen to without batting an eyelid smoothening out any rough edges on the way.

Nature of Work

Nature of Work of an event manager involves conceptualising an occasion keeping in mind the requirements as well as objectives of the client, planning, budgeting, organizing , executing and coordinating with different agencies to organise the event, seeking permission from various government authorities, visualising the stage design, arranging performers and media promoters for the event etc for the events like fashion shows, musical concerts, corporate seminars, exhibitions, wedding celebrations, parties, live performances, product launching etc.

Personal attributes

He/she should be dynamic, hard working, creative, confident and persuasive. He/ She must enjoy meeting people to form good interpersonal relationships. You should be a good organiser, a good communicator and be willing to work very hard. You should be interested in your work and believe in yourself. You should cultivate people and contacts because they are very necessary in your .profession.

Job Prospects

Starters in this field would do well to wet their feet in the smaller companies before aiming for the better known ones. Or they could work on a freelance basis by approaching the companies who would enter their names on their roster, and call them up when the need arises. Earnings would vary depending on the ability of the hiring firm to pay and the kind of work required.
You could also start as a Promotion Coordinator. To do this you would need to have the know-how of organising events. You would also need an initial investment to start the ball rolling.
Many large companies that need to organise shows/conferences, etc. have an inhouse event manager on their rolls. Dotcoms too have event managers to cater to their requirements.
There could be a downside to this profession. If you have less stamina, all the running around that you have to do would make you limp at the end of the day. Networking is of great help in this regard.
