The Government of India, through the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), has established five Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER).These institutes are located in Bhopal, Mohali, Pune, Kolkata and Thiruvanantapuram.

IISER Pune started functioning in August 2006 from a campus adjoining the National Chemical Laboratory, Pune. The main campus on 98 acres of land, near this site, is under construction and will be ready by December 2012. It will have a total of 32,000 sq.mt of built up academic space and 80,000 sq.mt of residential buildings. At present, all academic activities are housed in the transit campus at the Sai Trinity Towers, Pashan Circle (1.5 km from  the campus site) and at our hostel-guesthouse-academic complex already built on the campus. IISER Pune currently has 360 UG students,  100 PhD students and close to 60 faculty. The institute offers a five-year course leading to a BS-MS degree (after class XII) and a full fledged PhD programme in the basic sciences.

IISER Mohali was established in 2007 by the Government of India, through the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), to carry out research in frontier areas of science and to provide quality science education at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. The foundation stone was laid on 27th September 2006 by the Prime Minister of India. The first Director Prof.N Sathyamurthy joined on 18th June 2007. Classes for the first MS (Int) batch began on 16th August 2007. The transit campus was inaugurated on 13th Nov. 2007. The major focus at IISER Mohali is to create a world class scientific institution with an intellectually alive atmosphere of research. The doctoral program at IISER Mohali involves course work, a qualifying examination, thesis work and a thesis examination, leading to the award of a PhD degree. Besides research, students will be involved in several professional activities such as seminars, workshops, and review meetings. The institute has provision for a number of post-doctoral fellowships. Faculty research spans a diverse spectrum of interests ranging from structural, cellular & molecular biology, immunology, evolutionary biology and protein folding & misfolding in Biology, theoretical inorganic, organometallic chemistry, X-ray crystallography and spectroscopy in Chemistry, algebra, algebraic geometry, functional analysis, differential geometry and computational number theory in Mathematics, to quantum information theory, biomolecular NMR & quantum computing, statistical mechanics, ultrafast lasers, nonlinear dynamics, astrophysics, string theory and low temperature nanoscale systems in Physics. Research infrastructure available at IISER includes a computing facility, a sophisticated instrumentation facility housing NMR spectrometers, single crystal and powder X-ray diffractometers and a modern fast growing library.

(IISER-TVM) is dedicated to scientific research and science education of international standards.

Established in 2008 by the Government of India, through the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), based on the recommendation of Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, IISER-TVM is an autonomous institution awarding five year integrated MS degree in addition to Ph.D degrees in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and inter-disciplinary areas. The emphasis will be to develop a spirit of research cutting across disciplines from the beginning itself.

Indian Institute Of Science Education And Research ( IISER ) - Kolkata was established in 2006 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. IISER - K is designed to reach the prestigious position in the global setting that IISc, IIMs and IITs presently enjoy.  IISER - K is an autonomous institution awarding its own degrees. The central theme of the IISER - K is to integrate education with research so that undergraduate teaching as well as doctoral and postdoctoral research work could be carried out in symbiosis.

Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) were created in 2006 through a proclamation of Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, to promote quality education and research in basic sciences. Soon after the announcement, two of these institutes at Pune and Kolkata, respectively, were started in 2006. This was followed by an institute at Mohali (2007) and at Bhopal and Trivandrum in 2008. Each IISER is a degree granting autonomous institution with a prime focus to integrate science education and research, with a motive of attracting bright students and world class faculty.

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Bhopal will provide a platform for the faculty to engage in high quality pedagogy, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and to perform cutting edge research in frontier areas of basic sciences. The Institute is also committed to impart high moral and ethical values to students and create a genuine concern for social and environmental issues. With these set of broad objectives, it is believed that IISER Bhopal will emerge as a world-class Institute within a few years of its inception.
