Respiratory System in Animals
Aerodynamics of Lungs (Human):
- During expiration and inspiration a certain amount of air comes into lungs and goes out of it as per its capacity. These are expressed as pulmonary volumes and pulmonary capacities :
Tidal Volume (T.V.) :
- The volume of air trafficking in lungs at normal resting state i.e., = 500 ml.
- A healthy man can inspire or expire approx. 6000 – 8000 ml of air/minute.
Inspiratory Reserve Volume (IRV) or Complemental volume:
- The extra volume of air inspired with maximum efforts besides the tidal volume i.e., = 2500 – 3000 ml.
Expiratory Reserve volume (ERV) or Supplemental volume:
- The extra volume of air exhaled with maximal effort besides the tidal volume = 1000 – 1100 ml.
Residual Volume (RV) :
- The volume of air left in the lungs even after maximum forceful expiration (i.e. ERV) = 1100 ml – 1200 ml.
Dead Air Volume :
- The volume of air (=150 ml) that passes out unexchanged (or unused) and which remains in trachea, bronchi and bronchioles, (these parts are called Dead Air Space).
- Only 350 ml of the atmospheric air (T.V.) is actually exchanged during breathing i.e., 1/7th of total air in the lungs.
