1.
A mixture of helium and water vapour was sent into a hollow steel cylinder containing a solid drying agent. Immediately after admission the pressure inside the cylinder was 600 mm of Hg. After standing for some hours the pressure decreased slowly to a steady value of 560 mm of Hg. (i) calculate the mole percent of helium in the original mixture. (ii) If the temperature during experiment was 22°C and the drying agent registered a weight increase of 0.27 g, find the volume of the steel cylinder. The volume occupied by the drying agent may be taken to be negligible.
Ans.
(i) The decrease in pressure from initial value of 600 mm to final value of 560 mm is due to complete absorption of water vapour by the drying agent.
