What are you Going to Learn in Class 10 Science?

Chapter 1 – Chemical reactions and equations.

You must have observed many changes in your day to day life. But do you know:

  • Why milk gets spoiled if kept in open air for a long time?
  • What happens to water when kept in a freezer?
  • Why silver ornaments turn blackish after some time whereas silver itself is white in colour?
  • Why copper vessels (Pooja Kalash) after some time turns greenish, whereas the copper metal itself is shiny brown in colour?
  • What are these changes or reactions?
  • Why and how do these take place?
  • Let us study the basic concept behind them.

Chapter 2 – Acids, bases and salt

In everyday life, we come across different things of different tastes. For example lemon tastes sour and bittergourd tastes bitter. The sour and bitter tastes of food are due to acids and bases present in them.

Excess of an acid in the stomach can cause acidity which can be neutralized by giving a base. This is because, whenever an acid reacts with a base, a salt is formed, which is neutral in nature.

More interesting facts, properties and uses of acids, bases and salts will be discussed in this chapter.

Chapter 3 – Metals and Non-metals

At present, more than 114 chemical elements are known. Many of them are found to occur in nature whereas some of them have been made by artificial methods and are called synthetic elements.

Each element has a set of characteristic properties. To make the study of these elements easier, they are grouped on the basis of their common properties into two classes––metals and non-metals.

Different metals and non-metals have different physical and chemical properties. Therefore, they are used also in a different manner.

We will read about this in detail in the following chapter.

Chapter 4 – Carbon and Its Compounds

Carbon is an element which is of immense significance to us in both its elemental form and in the combined form.

Food, clothes, medicines, books or many of the things are all based on this versatile element carbon. All living structures are carbon based.

The earth’s crust has only 0.02%. Carbon in the form of minerals (like carbonates, hydrogen-carbonates, coal and petroleum) and atmosphere has 0.03% of carbon dioxide. In spite of this small amount of carbon available in nature, the importance of carbon seems to be immense. In this chapter, we will be studying the properties of carbon which lead to this anomaly.

Chapter 5 – Periodic Classification of Elements

Around the year 1800, only 30 elements were known. Till date, 114 elements have been discovered of which, some occurs in free state and some in combined state. Earlier it was not difficult to study them separately, but as the number increased it became difficult to study the properties of all of them separately. To sort out this problem, various attempts were made to classify the elements, which we will discuss in brief in this lesson.

Chapter 6 – Life Processes

  1. How do you recognize a living thing?
  2. Do you know that plants also respire?
  3. Everyday we eat food but have you ever thought, why?
  4. How it is absorbed and utilized and finally what happens to the waste?

All these queries are answered in this lesson ‘Life Processes’ It enlightens us on the different systems like

  1. Digestion
  2. Respiration
  3. Transportation
  4. Excretion

Chapter 7 – Control and Coordination

  1. Have you ever thought why do we feel pain and why we close our ears when fire cracker bursts suddenly?
  2. How do we feel hungry or our mouth becomes watery upon seeing delicious food?
  3. How the plants show a peculiar pattern of growth or bend towards light?
  4. What guides the flowering and fruiting mechanism in plants?
  5. How does billions of cells in our body function in a well coordinated manner?

Let us find out the answers of the above queries.

Chapter 8 – How do Organisms Reproduce?

Reproduction is an important process which distinguishes living organism from non-living.

Reproduction is not necessary to maintain the life of an individual unlike the essential life processes like nutrition, respiration, excretion, etc.

Moreover a lot of energy is spent to produce more individuals.

But then, why do organisms reproduce?

The different individuals of a species share many common characters. Also, we see the offsprings of one parent have certain differences.

How do organisms reproduce?

Let us discover our inquisitiveness in this chapter.

Chapter 9 – Heredity and Evolution

Every organism reproduces either asexually or sexually to produce offsprings, which are similar to the parents.

However, offsprings show some variations from their parents and also among themselves, so that each one has its own individual identity.

Have you seen any two human beings exactly alike except the identical twins?

Besides this, origin of life on earth is an established fact. By the process of gradual and continuous change, living organisms have evolved to exhibit such a wide diversity.

In the following chapter, we will learn about heredity and sex-determination and also about evidences and theories of evolution.

Chapter 10 – Light Reflection and Refraction

Remember the first things we do in our day to day life.

  • –Getting up from the bed.
  • –Switching on the light button.
  • –Brushing our teeth or combing our hair etc.while standing in front of the mirror.

  • –Wearing our spectacles.
  • These all things show certain scientific facts of life, e.g. importance of light, the phenomena of reflection and refraction etc.

Let us study these facts in a planned manner in this chapter.

You will learn Convergence and divergence of light. Images formed by a concave mirror; related concepts; centre of curvature; principal axis. Optic centre, focus, focal length. Refraction; laws of refraction, Images formed by a convex lens; Applications of mirrors and lenses; Applications of concepts of refraction; velocity of light, refractive index

Chapter 11 – The Human Eye and Colorful World

We have already read about refraction of light by lenses. Human eye also has a convex lens. What is the function of this lens in the human eye?

Lenses are also used in the spectacles to correct vision. How?

Sometimes, we can see a rainbow in the sky after a rain shower. Have you ever thought of, how is it formed?

We will find out answers of above questions in this chapter along with the study of some interesting optical phenomena.

This chapter will cover Functioning of a lens in human eye; Problems of Vision and Remedies. Appreciation of Concept of Refraction; Twinkling of Stars; Dispersion of Light; Scattering of light.

    Chapter 12 – Electricity

We all have gone through the trauma of electricity failures. Electricity has become an integral part of our lives just like food and water. It has revolutionized our life-style, homes and industries. The list of devices that are based on it are unending. The use of electricity is growing so fast that its demand is doubling every 7-10 years. Let us try to understand the basic concepts of this revolutionary and wonderful gift of science.

This chapter deals with Discovery, Electric charge and properties, conductors and insulators, electric current, electric potential and electric potential difference, electric circuit and components, ohm’s law, experimental verification, resistance, factors affecting resistance, resistivity. Combination of resistors, heating effect, electric energy and electric power.

Chapter 13 – Magnetic Effects of Electric Current

For many years, scientists thought that electricity & magnetism as separate subjects which were to be studied separately.

The first evidence of any connection between electricity & magnetism was established by Danish physicist, H.C. Oersted. The observation that electric current can set up a magnetic field, has led to some of the most fruitful achievements in the areas of industrial & technical developments.

In the chapter electricity, we have already read the heating & chemical effects of electric current. In this chapter, we will learn the magnetic effects of current.

Magnetic field, field lines, field due to a current carrying wire, field due to current carrying coil or solenoid; Force on current carrying conductor, Fleming’s left hand rule. Electro magnetic induction. Induced potential difference, Induced current. Direct current. Alternating current; Frequency of AC. Advantage of AC over DC. Domestic electric circuits.

Chapter 14 – Sources of Energy

All of us know that energy can neither be created nor destroyed. The total energy is always conserved during a physical or a chemical process. So, we should be able to perform endless activities without thinking about energy resources.

Energy lights our cities, moves our vehicles and runs the wheels of industries. It also warms and cools our homes and places of work, cooks our food, plays our music and entertains us through television. But, have we ever thought that the energy in the useable form is dissipated to the surroundings in less useable forms and cannot be used again. The study of this chapter will help to deal with facts, like

This chapter consist of Sources of energy: Different forms of energy, leading to different sources for human use: fossil fuels, solar energy; biogas, wind, water and tidal energy; nuclear energy. Renewable versus non-renewable sources.

    Chapter 15 – Our Environment

The natural world where we live is called as our environment. The environment includes both living components (like plants, animals, bacteria etc.) and non-living components (like temperature, soil, light etc.)

Humans are the only organisms who try to change the natural environment to fulfill their needs. The various human activities are damaging the balanced and healthy environment.

In the following chapter, we will read how human activities have given rise to various environmental problems as well as we will read about solutions to such problems.

Environmental problems, their solutions, biodegradable and non-biodegradable materials, ozone depletion.

Chapter 16 – Sustainable Management of Natural Resources

Ever since man appeared on the earth’s surface, he has been gifted with nature for existence.

He needed land to live, plants and animals to get food and nutrition, water to drink and wash, sunshine to get heat and energy, forest and wild life to get so many other things for his sustenance.

But when human being uses these resources, he should think of its management for sustainable development.

This chapter will help to develop awareness about the management of natural resources and also the various laws and regulations enforced to protect the natural resources.

Management of natural resources, conservation and judicious use of natural resources. Forest and wild life, coal and petroleum conservation. Peoples’ participation-chipko movement. Legal perspectives in conservation and international scenario. The regional environment: Big dams, advantages and limitations; alternatives if any. Water harvesting. Sustainability of natural resources.

      1. What are the different sources of energy?
      2. How do we harness this energy to suit our requirements?
      3. Will our energy needs be met the same way as it has been happening till now or would the scenario change?
